What is the difference between Therapy and Coaching?
Therapy and coaching are both powerful tools for sex and relationships, with different scopes:
Therapy
Content/purpose: focuses on deeper emotional and psychological issues, like healing from trauma and addressing sexual dysfunction tied to mental health concerns. It often involves exploring past experiences to better understand their impact on your current relationships and intimacy.
In couples/relationships: therapy often explores the emotional and relational dynamics contributing to conflict or disconnection, helping partners heal and rebuild trust.
Who qualifies: As a service regulated by licensure boards, therapy can only be provided to people where the therapist has a valid license (Karli K Counseling can offer therapy to clients in Texas and Florida).
Coaching
Content/purpose: offers practical tools and actionable strategies to improve your sexual and relational life. It’s ideal for building confidence, enhancing pleasure, learning communication skills, or exploring new dynamics like kink or non-traditional relationships. Coaching focuses on moving forward with clarity and empowerment, rather than diving into unresolved emotional wounds.
In couples/relationships: coaching focuses on enhancing communication, reigniting passion, and developing skills to deepen intimacy and collaboration in the present.
Who qualifies: Coaching does not require a license, and can therefore be provided to anyone, anywhere.
How I maintain ethical boundaries between my businesses:
As both a licensed therapist and coach, I keep therapy and coaching distinct to ensure ethical care. I clearly explain the differences between the two, so you’ll always know which service you’re receiving.
I never provide therapy and coaching to the same person at the same time. If a transition is needed, we take a pause, evaluate the shift, and agree on the new approach. I follow strict ethical guidelines to ensure clarity every step of the way.
From these explanations if you think therapy is a better place to start, you can learn about my sex and relationship therapy services here.
